Space and Rocket Ships

Space and Rocket Ships

This week we explored space! We reviewed what we learned about our solar system from last weeks Montessori lesson, watched videos about space and astronauts and asked questions like “How does a rocket get up into space?”, “How do astronauts get back to Earth?”, “Why do you land on the ground when you jump up instead of floating off into space?”, “How do astronauts shower?”, Do astronauts use their muscles?” and “Why is space black?”.

Many questions later and feeling very inspired we got creative making our own rockets, spaceships and international spacestations. We wondered if there’s other people or animals like ours in outer space and decided that our rockets needed little friends which we made of air dry clay:

Since we liked observational drawing from photographs and 3D objects so much last week we went on to inspect features of rocket ships and drew our own. We transferred our images onto styrofoam printing plates and had much fun creating a starry night sky with glow-in the dark-watercolors before we got to make real ink prints of our awesome space rockets:

Needless to say, we all want to be astronauts when we grow up. We played space shuttle all afternoon which is the perfect opportunity to remind our children how fun it is to make up their own play about space. We also took a break from playing Star Wars or weapons (I always tell the children that Star Wars already exists and that what they create new all by themselves is way more awesome) and even built a zoo with our new, beloved tiger plushie!

From Ms. Sue

The kids are busy, busy, busy! They are working on letters, numbers, stacking blocks, golden bead systems and a little painting and creating. There is independent work, cooperation and collaboration going on in so many aspects during their time together.

We have been learning about plants and what they need to survive. We are beginning with the root systems, planting and taking care of plants. They are enjoying the process.
