Wow, what a way to close out 2022! In November and December, the Trailhead launched our Pop Up Children’s Museum, and it has been a ton of fun! As we continue to navigate challenges and delays in reopening the permanent Trailhead Children’s Museum, we have committed to monthly pop up museums, each featuring an exhibit that will live in the future museum space. In November, we revealed the Flight Lab, sponsored by Crested Butte Oxygen Rentals. We explored all things wind, weather, and air, and wow were we blown away by the community’s response! The Flight Lab itself, which is a stand alone wind tunnel, was popular with adults and children alike, and we saw everyone’s creative juices flowing as they created all kinds of flying machines to test in the Flight Lab.

In December, we embraced the season of lights with our Light Lab exhibit, sponsored by Mountain Colors Paint + Supply and the Showroom by Mountain Colors. The Light Lab is a versatile light table that lets us explore light, color, and mixing different colors and levels of light together. A highlight of the Light Lab was our Glow Cave, where deep darkness and all kinds of glowy colors helped us heighten our sense of sight and explore with our senses in a unique way. For the adults, we were taken on a blast to the past with an overhead projector, straight from your high school biology class! The projector lit up a wall of the pop up museum space, and we played with light and reflections in real time.

At both pop ups, we have featured our Art Bar, made possible by the Crested Butte Arts Festival. At the Art Bar, the possibilities are endless, and there is no right or wrong way to create! The Art Bar always produces unexpected, but amazing results when adults and children come and create in their own way. It is a unique and exciting experience to see what ideas and inspiration come from the open-ended creation opportunities that the Art Bar provides. You never know where someone’s imagination is going to take them!

As we look forward to 2023, we look forward to exploring, creating, and playing even more at monthly pop up museums. Our next pop up museum will feature Magnet Mania, on January 22nd and 23rd at the ballrooms at the Lodge at Mountaineer Square. Magnet Mania is made possible by the Crested Butte Rotary Club.

While we are still striving for a permanent museum space, we are thrilled to serve our community through pop up museums and programming, and sharing the power of play with adults and children however we can. Thank you for joining us on our journey, and we hope that you can come play with us soon!
